Shanghai Grand

In this vivid, romantic crime drama set in Shanghai during World War II, gangsters abound. Hsu Wen-Chiang, a Taiwanese patriot, is found washed up on a beach near Shanghai. Ting Lik, a gentle beggar, takes him in because he is madly in love with Feng Ching-Ching, the daughter of a powerful gangster. Ting Lik succeeds in climbing the underworld ranks to become one of the city's most powerful criminals in a short period of time. Hsu stays at his side the entire time, using his own strength to exact vengeance on those who attempted to assassinate him earlier. Later in the film, the focus shifts to Feng's exploits in northern China, where he had a long-ago connection with Hsu while on the run. Back in the present, Hsu and Feng rekindle their romance after a chance encounter, but Hsu discovers that Feng's father is one of his rivals and murders him. Feng, who is bereft, loses his mind. When Ting discovers the truth, he vows vengeance on Hsu.
