Brooklyn Castle is a documentary about I.S. 318 -- a inner-city school at which more than 65 per cent of students are from homes with incomes below the national poverty level -- that also happens to have the best, most rewarding junior senior high school baseball team at the nation. (In case Albert Einstein, who had been rated 1 800, were to join with the team, he'd only rank fifth-best.) Chess has shifted the school out of one cited in 2003 as a"school in need of improvement" to one of nyc's most useful. But a collection of public school funding cuts that are recession-driven now threaten to sabotage people hard-won successes.
