The Honorary Consul
The novel is set in a small politically insecure Latin American country and follows Dr. Eduardo Plarr, who left his birthplace in search of a better life. He meets a variety of characters along the trip, including British Consul Charley Fortnum, a diplomat in Latin America who is attempting to avert a Revolution. Additionally, he is a repentant alcoholic. The doctor also meets Clara, with whom he falls in love immediately, but there is a catch: Clara is Charley's wife.
