Smilla Jaspersen, half Danish, half Greenlander, attempts to understand the passing of a small boy that falls from her apartment building's roof. Smilla uncovers a trail of signs leading to a business that has made expeditions that are cryptic . Scenes from the film were taken in Copenhagen and western Greenland. The film was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival, where director Bille August was nominated for the Golden Bear.
